About Us

In 1928, a year before the “Great Depression,” Dr. Thomas R. Gaines founded a medical practice called Anderson Eye and Ear Associates, devoted to helping patients with eye, as well as ear, nose and throat complaints. With time, a reputation of outstanding and professional care was established and the practice thrived.

Advances in medical knowledge brought about the division of Ophthalmology (Eye) and Otolaryngology (Ear, Nose and Throat) into separate specialties. The first Ophthalmologist was Dr. Thomas Stanfield followed by Dr. Joe Yarbrough, each of whom helped to bring the latest techniques and technology in eye care to the Upstate.

Anderson Eye & Ear Associates later adopted the name Medicus to help distinguish the growing practice. The doctors at Medicus served the greater Anderson Community with the most progressive, yet proven, methods and technology in the region, while maintaining the values of high quality and personalized care that built the foundation of Dr. Gaines’ practice.

In 1978, the group moved to the present facility at 1655 East Greenville Street, a location many called “out in the country.” In addition to caring for patients throughout the Upstate, Medicus has consistently demonstrated support for the arts and welfare of the greater Anderson community.

Recent changes in medical economics, however, have led to a separation of the Eye and ENT practices and creation of Medicus Eye Group which is an independent medical clinic specializing in comprehensive medical and surgical eye care.

Eye Exams Anderson, SCThe Ophthalmologists of Medicus Eye Group: Dr. Mark Wolken, and Dr. Reid Murphy, are all Board Certified and practice comprehensive ophthalmology. The doctors have more than 75 years combined experience and trained at leading ophthalmology residency programs. As a practice, we strive to be leaders in the field of Ophthalmology and continue to evaluate all new technology to provide the best possible eye care for our patients.

The Medicus Eye Group offers an extensive array of services ranging from basic eye exams for glasses, contact lenses, and laser vision correction, to laser and surgical treatment of diseases including cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetes, and facial plastic surgery. All surgery is performed at the AnMedHealth Medicus Surgery Center adjacent to our office on an outpatient basis. As a group, we annually perform more than 1,800 cataract surgeries at this facility.
